Paio [ 'pa jo ]: person that comes from a non-gypsy family.




Rancio/a [ 'řaNθjo/a ] : person who is known for being traditional and closed-minded.




El Culto [ el'kulto ]: literally the cult. Term referring to the Christian religious practices that the members of the gypsy community follow. Generally linked to evangelism.




Porras [ 'po řas ]: traditional gypsy food usually served as breakfast on Sunday. It is made with flour, baking powder and water mixed together and deep fried in the shape of a snake. It can be sprinkled with caster sugar and dipped in hot chocolate. Similar to “churros”.




El pañuelo [ elpa' ñwelo ]: traditional gypsy practice that takes place during the wedding night. The young couple is asked to leave the party to go to their new house. It is the time to have a sexual relationship for the first time. Once it concludes, the couple is meant to show a blood-stained handkerchief or a piece of cloth to all the assistants to prove that they honoured their parents and waited until marriage.
